India recorded 1.20 lakh of ‘traffic accident negligence deaths’ cases in 2020 – 328 people lose their lives every day on average – despite lockdowns from COVID-19, data shows of the government.

Up to 3.92 lakh of lives lost in three years in deaths due to car accident negligence, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) revealed in its annual ‘Crime India’ report for 2020 .

While 1.20 lakh of such deaths were recorded in 2020, the figures stood at 1.36 lakh in 2019 and 1.35 lakh in 2018, according to the data.

The country has also recorded 1.35 lakh of “hit-and-run” cases since 2018, according to the NCRB report, which reports to the Union’s Interior Ministry.

In 2020 alone, there were 41,196 “hit and run” cases compared to 47,504 in 2019 and 47,028 in 2018, according to the report.

On average, 112 “hit and run” cases have been reported across the country every day over the past year, according to the data.

Cases of “injury” by reckless or negligent driving on public roads amounted to 1.30 lakh in 2020, 1.60 lakh in 2019 and 1.66 lakh in 2018, while cases of “serious injury Amounted to 85,920, 1.12 lakh and 1.08 lakh, respectively, the data showed.

At the same time, 52 cases of death due to negligence related to railway accidents were recorded across the country in 2020, compared to 55 in 2019 and 35 in 2018, according to the report.

In 2020, India also recorded 133 cases of “death due to medical negligence”, up from 201 in 2019 and 218 in 2018, according to NCRB data.

There were 51 cases of “civic organ neglect deaths” in 2020 while there were 147 cases in 2019 and 40 in 2018, according to the report.

Another 6,367 cases of “death due to other negligence” were reported across the country in 2020, up from 7,912 in 2019 and 8,687 in 2018, he showed.

The NCRB said in the report that the country remained under full lockdown from March 25, 2020 to May 31, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in which movement in public space was “very limited.”
