Sri Lanka won the trophy for the sixth time after beating Pakistan by 23 runs in the 2022 Asia Cup final. After winning the toss, Pakistan opted to bowl first but failed to reach the 171-run goal Chase.
Despite having several big batters in its batting order, Pakistan failed to score quickly in the last overs and was thrown out for 147 in 20 overs.
After Pakistan’s defeat, some pundits criticized the players for their poor performance. Former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar criticized wicketkeeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan for hitting slow and failing to finish matches.
Rizwan can’t finish the game – Shoaib Akhtar
Mohammad Rizwan scored 55 runs off 49 balls. His strike rate is just over 112. When he tried to score early, he was ejected, which put pressure on the team. Akhtar questioned Pakistan’s team selection and criticized Rizwan’s failure to complete the innings after spending time in the middle.
“Are we playing against the wrong team again and again? Mohammad Rizwan is questioning because he can’t finish the game, he needs support from others. He played run-a-ball innings and after that, if he can’t finish the game finish, it becomes a problem. So I think Pakistan played very bad cricket, they should have hit first after winning the toss. I don’t know what their plan was,’ said Akhtar on his YouTube channel.
Sri Lanka proved itself to be the best team of the tournament – Shoaib Akhtar
“What an amazing nation Sri Lanka is, look what they have been through in the last six months or so. They have managed to come out here and they are showing the world that they are the best in the tournament despite having India and Pakistan there. I am very happy for Sri Lanka, well done. I’m very happy for Afghanistan, they played good cricket too, but unfortunately they lost to us (Pakistan)’ he added.
Akhtar was also critical of Pakistani captain Babar Azam, who struggled with the bat throughout the tournament and failed to score for half a century.
“But Pakistan leaked too many runs with the ball. Babar Azam did not score any points during the tournament. Class Class Class, leave the class aside. Your class will only be displayed if you are in shape. He tries to hit from the first ball itself. Second, Fakhar Zaman doesn’t know what happened to him. And Ifitikar Ahmed, he continues to play run-a-ball innings,” he added.
Akhtar, who was full of praise for Sri Lanka, wished Dasun Shanaka and his company all the best. He said they played solid cricket and showed resilience.
“Overall very poor performances from Pakistani bowlers and batters. Sri Lankans, you absolutely deserved this win, you are the best team on the team in the tournament and you are going to be the best country in the world. My best wishes are with you for showing resilience and playing solid cricket,” he added.
Rizwan ended the tournament with the most runs. He played a total of six matches and, using three fifties, scored 281 runs at an average of 56.20. However, his strike rate of 117.57 was criticized during the tournament.
