Three people have been arrested in Delhi in connection with the murder of a 34-year-old Youth Congress leader in Faridkot, Punjab on February 18, Delhi police said on Sunday.

Punjab Police have been informed of the arrest of Faridkot residents Gurvinder Pal (the key accused, 32), Sukhwinder Singh (23) and Saurabh Verma (21) in the murder of Gurlal Singh Bhalwan, a said a Delhi police officer. .

Deputy Police Commissioner (Special Cell) Manishi Chandra also said two other associates of the arrested defendants were still at large and efforts were underway to arrest them.

They would all be members of the Lawrence Vishnoi Gang. Vishnoi is currently in Ajmer prison.

The defendants intended to kill Bhalwan because they suspected him of being a member of the rival Bhambhia gang, the senior police officer said.

The officer said the plot to kill Bhalwan was scripted by Goldy Brar, a Canadian associate of Lawrence Vishnoi Gang who has several cases recorded against him.

Brar runs an extortion racket in Canada from where he targets several prominent Punjab-based businessmen, he said.

Police said Goldy ordered Gurvinder to kill Bhalwan on February 9. The leader of the Youth Congress wrote on Facebook on February 5 that he was planning to travel to Delhi to join the farmers’ protest against the three farm laws.

According to their plan, Gurvinder, accompanied by two snipers, followed Bhalwan closely as he traveled to the Singhu border on February 9, the officer said.

“However, the task could not be completed due to the size of the protesting crowd that was present,” he said.


The trio then followed Bhalwan to Jantar Mantar in Delhi where leaders and congressional workers gathered to protest against farm laws, the DCP said, adding that the trio left the track because they were struggling. to dodge the security arrangements made by the Delhi police at the protest sites.

Later, as led by Goldy, Sukhvinder and Sourav began to monitor Bhalwan’s movements in Faridkot, the DCP said.

“On February 18, when Bhalwan left his home, the duo started to follow him and communicated their movements to Gurvinder, who had transported the shooters from Chandigarh to Faridkot,” he said.

Police said a dozen shots were fired at Bhalwan as he stood near his car after walking out of a friend’s shop at Jubilee Chowk in Faridkot.

The accused duo then fled on motorbikes.

He was rushed to hospital, where he died during treatment.

Bhalwan was the president of the Faridkot District Youth Congress and a member of Zila Parishad from Golewala, Punjab, police said.

“Late Saturday evening, we received reports that three people suspected of being involved in the murder of a political leader in Faridkot, Punjab, are expected to arrive in Sarai Kale Khan and go to their hiding places in Uttar. Pradesh. As a result, our teams raided and apprehended Gurvinder Pal, Sukhwinder Singh and Saurabh Verma. Two firearms and eight live cartridges were recovered from their possession, ”he said.

Goldy’s cousin Gurlal, former president of the Student Organization of Punjab University (SOPU), was killed in a gang war between the Lawrence Vishnoi and Bhambhia gangs in Chandigarh in October 2020.
