The minority National Assembly caucus of the upper and lower legislative chambers criticized President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, describing his administration as so inept as it has become so devoid of ideas for tackling insecurity.
The caucus, which included lawmakers from the People’s Democratic Party under the chairmanship of Senate Minority Leader Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, sounded the alarm that insecurity that was at the area level engulfed the entire country over the past six years of administration led by APC.
Speaking at a press briefing after the caucus meeting, they listed Buhari’s breaches of Nigeria’s constitution, stressing that the caucus will take action at the appropriate time if insecurity persists.
The step which was apparently an “impeachment of President Buhari”, they argued, was to save the country from total collapse.
“This is a joint meeting of the minority party caucus of the 9th National Assembly in the Senate and the House of Representatives.
“We have looked at the problem that Nigeria is facing right now with regards to the security of Nigeria. We have looked at constitutional reform and we have also made what we call suggestions on the way forward.
“As a minority National Assembly caucus, we have expressed serious concerns about the ineptitude and inability of the APC-led government to stop our nation’s drift into lawlessness.
“This APC-led government during the creation and during the 2015 election campaign promised the Nigerian people that they would take care of security and that there would be no security issues, but unfortunately and the more unfortunately, from 2015 to date, not only the security, but the APC administration rather widened the insecurity situation not only from the northeast, but it spread to the northwest, north-central, south-east, south-south and south-west.
“Almost all parts of Nigeria face one security problem or the other.
“Therefore, as a caucus, we suggest that immediate action be taken by government at all levels to put in place an appropriate security infrastructure, whether in the mold of state police and others. constitutional reforms of the nation.
The caucus further criticized FG’s economic policies which they said caused an inflationary trend that left the country in tatters.
“The caucus also expresses very deep concern about the government’s economic strategy which has resulted in what is called quantitative, or what an ordinary man knows as printing money and which has led to high inflation. , to a devaluation of our naira to a height that we did not expect.
“It has also resulted in concomitant unemployment and has led the government to consider raising the price of fuel, the tariff for electricity and all kinds of charges for the unhappy Nigerian public.
“We believe the government should reverse itself and should not continue this mindless borrowing without seeing the benefits.
“Third, the caucus has taken note that the chair is absent from office. We haven’t seen our president; we have not heard from our president despite the continuing killings which have turned Nigeria into a killing field.
“Therefore, the caucus has taken note and will continue to take note of the constitutional violations that are currently occurring by the APC government and we will use all constitutional methods and measures in due course after consultation with our colleagues to take appropriate action.” to save the country from collapse.
“As a caucus, we want to warn all Nigerians and the international community of threats to the lives of our members; to those who are telling the truth about the state of Nigeria today and these threats have taken various forms including threats to lives. “
