Apple plans to spend billions on live sports content

Apple plans to spend a lot of money on live sports content over the next few years.

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives says Apple sees live sports content as a key strategy to grow its subscriber base for its video streaming service. Ives thinks Apple will be bidding on several sports packages that are up for renewal over the next four years. These include NFL (Sunday Night Ticket), NASCAR and NBA/WNBA.

With competing platforms like Amazon offering established deals, Apple is reportedly “willing to spend billions” on live sports content to catch up. Ives estimates that Apple has around 20 million paid subscribers, a far cry from Disney+’s 118 million paid subscribers and Netflix’s 214 million paid subscribers.
