  • The Kenya Kwanza coalition received a major boost on Wednesday, August 3, after a sitting governor stepped down in next week’s election, backing a candidate sponsored by the coalition led by Vice President William Ruto.

Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi Mohamud withdrew from the race in favor of Ugas Sheikh Mohamed, who is competing for the Amani National Congress (ANC). He defended his seat as an independent candidate.

The county boss noted that his decision to pull out came after deliberation and a number of factors that pushed him to pull out of the race and support Ugas.

“In my opinion, he is the most suitable candidate to carry the provincial flag. Ugas Sheikh Mohamed is not only widely accepted in the county, but also has relatively little baggage,” said the Wajir governor. The governor of Wajir gathered his supporters to support the ANC candidate for the governor’s seat.
