Bulgaria culls 25,000 quail to contain flu outbreak

SOFIA (Reuters) – Bulgaria will begin culling about 25,000 quail and destroying quail eggs at an industrial farm near the capital Sofia after discovering a highly contagious strain of bird flu, food safety authorities said on Wednesday.

The farm outbreak in the town of Etropole, some 80 kilometers (49.71 mi) east of Sofia, was discovered after reports of high mortality among the birds, the food safety agency said in a statement.

The risk to humans from the disease is considered low, but previous outbreaks in farm birds have led to extensive slaughter programs to contain the spread.
