SINGAPORE: A fire broke out in a wet market along Canberra Road on Monday (May 17th), the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) said.
The SCDF said it was alerted to a fire in Block 511 Canberra Road around 12:45 p.m. Monday. The wet market is located in the center of Sembawang Mart.
Authorities forced entry into the market and the fire was extinguished with three water jets. The fire involved “the contents of a wet market,” the SCDF said.
No injuries or casualties have been reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation, he added.
MP Ong Ye Kung (PAP-Sembawang) said in a Facebook post that he would work with the Housing Council to contact affected merchants to provide assistance.
He expressed his gratitude to the residents who contacted the SCDF and praised the officers for their “quick action” in putting out the fire.
Mr Ong said he was told the fire was contained in the wet market and that no one was in the market when the fire occurred.
“While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, given the extent of the fire, we will work with HDB to reestablish the wet market (as soon as possible) and contact all affected dealers to provide them with assistance, ”said Ong.
According to the HDB website, the Sembawang Mart building also has a supermarket and food court.
Day care centers, kindergartens and schools, as well as retail stores are also located here.
