Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has revealed that the trio of Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen and Ruben Loftus-Cheek all suffered injuries in training on Monday.
The Blues needed a penalty shootout to eliminate Southampton and qualify for the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday night.
The match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, as Che Adams called off Kai Havertz’s opener.
Tuchel admitted after the game that his team selection was affected after three players injured themselves on the training ground the day before.
Azpilicueta has a problem with his shoulder, Christensen had to undergo minor surgery for a dental problem, and Loftus-Cheek injured his hip.
“We hope Azpi will be back for the weekend. He injured his shoulder yesterday in training when he fell on it. It’s very painful but it’s Azpi and he’s a badass.
“Ruben felt after training a pain in the hip joint. Hopefully we can deal with it for Saturday.
“Andreas needed to recover from dental surgery and he should return to training on Thursday if there are no complications,” Tuchel said.
