Chelsea sack manager Thomas Tuchel after Champions League loss to Dinamo Zagreb


Chelsea’s defeat on Tuesday follows a disappointing start to the season, which saw the club also lose to Leeds and Southampton in the Premier League. In addition, Tuchel was also involved in an ugly touchline incident with Tottenham coach Antonio Conte after their teams drew 1-1 earlier in the season.

The former Paris Saint-Germain coach had only been with the club since January 2021 when he replaced Frank Lampard.

Last season, Tuchel took Chelsea to the semi-finals of the Champions League, before losing to eventual winner Real Madrid and finishing third in the Premier League. Chelsea also reached the finals of the FA Cup and the Carabeo Cup, both of which they lost to Liverpool on penalties.

Chelsea’s then-Russian owner Roman Abramovich sold the club this year to new owners, led by Todd Boehly.

Chelsea invested a Premier League record £273 million this summer to renew Tuchel’s squad, which featured Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucarella and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
