Clementi and Whampoa markets close after being identified as COVID-19 clusters linked to Jurong fishing port

SINGAPORE: Clementi 448 Market and Food Center and Whampoa Drive Market will close for two weeks starting Thursday (July 22) after being identified as COVID-19 clusters linked to Jurong fishing port.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) said it was investigating cases of COVID-19 involving markets and food centers that are likely “stocked” by fishmongers who visited Jurong fishing port to collect their stock and sell in these markets and food centers.

A total of 22 cases of COVID-19 have been detected among people who have worked or visited the Clementi 448 Market and Food Center. 12 other cases of COVID-19 have been detected at Whampoa Drive Market, the Ministry of Health said. Health in its daily update.

Markets will be closed from Thursday to August 5 to break the chain of transmission and for a thorough cleaning, the health ministry added.

Free COVID-19 testing will be extended to people who visited Clementi 448 Market and Food Center between July 7 and July 21.

The Department of Health will also extend free testing for visitors between July 7 and July 21 to the Haig Road Market and Food Center, which was identified on Tuesday as a group linked to the fishing port.

As an “extra layer of cantonment” to help identify cases of COVID-19 and prevent further transmission, the Department of Health is working with the People’s Association to distribute rapid test self-test kits. antigen (ART) to people who have visited selected markets and food centers in the past two weeks.

Pickup will take place Thursday and Friday at Residents’ Committee centers near Whampoa Drive Market and 726 West Coast Market.

“Eligible people are strongly encouraged to collect and perform self-tests using these ART kits,” the health ministry said.

As of noon as of Wednesday, 454 cases of COVID-19 are linked to the Jurong Fishery Port / Hong Lim Market and Food Center cluster.
