New reporting reveals Chief Justice John Roberts was working on a compromise to save abortion rights, but leaked Roe draft opinion hampered his efforts.

Week after week after the first vote in December, after oral arguments in which five judges on the far right voted to overthrow Roe, Roberts was the only one in the middle who wanted to uphold the abortion ban but refused to go any further.
then Roe, but of course you have the three liberals who say we don’t want to do any of this, we don’t want to disrupt abortion rights at all. Roberts keeps trying. And interestingly, not only did his work affect his efforts for the two newest judges, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, but it also affected the others.
The hard-right judges became concerned that he might be. And he was able to single out judges on the extremely conservative side over a more moderate conservative centrist. So they got worried about what he was up to.
And the Liberals who had such a defeat this session began to hope that maybe Roe wouldn’t fall completely. But on May 2, when the draft of the advice was released and everything went public, it made John Roberts’ efforts all the more difficult because he is a man who likes to work privately, in secret, and offers some concessions himself. Seeking concessions for some sort of, as I said, ideological compromise. It went to the wire, according to my sources, but in the end it made no headwinds.
The Supreme Court Leaker Was A Conservative Who Tried To Stop Roberts From Saving Abortion Rights
It is now clear which side the Roe draft leaked on and why. The far-right judges feared Chief Justice Roberts would succeed in reaching a compromise that would have saved Roe, so they leaked the draft to block all Conservative votes.
Roberts only needed one more conservative judge to go with him to save Roe, and the Alito/Thomas faction feared he would be successful, so they leaked the draft to stop his efforts.
Ted Cruz swore the leak came from a Liberal, when it was always a Conservative leaker that made the most sense.
Conservatives will break any laws, rules or norms to impose their unpopular and undesirable agenda on the American people.
