Coronavirus live updates: India reports 2,64,202 new Covid cases, 6.7% up from Thursday


India Covid Cases: A total of 5,753 Omicron cases are among all the Covid cases reported so far.

New Delhi:

India reported 2,64,202 new COVID-19 infections in 24 hours, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Friday, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 3,65,82,129.

The new cases mark a 6.7% jump from the 2.47 lakh daily cases reported on Thursday. A total of 5,753 cases of Omicron are among all Covid cases reported in India so far.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 14.78% – down from 13.11% on Thursday – while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 11.83%.

The country also reported 315 new deaths, bringing India’s total death toll to 485,350, while active cases rose to 12,72,073.

Active cases account for 3.48 percent of the total number of infections, while the national COVID-19 cure rate has fallen to 95.2 percent, the ministry said on Friday.

Google mandates weekly COVID-19 tests for US offices: report

Alphabet Inc’s Google is temporarily imposing weekly COVID-19 tests on anyone entering Google’s offices or facilities in the United States, TBEN reported Friday, citing a memo obtained by the news channel.

Anyone entering Google’s U.S. work sites will be required to test negative, report their vaccination status, and wear surgical-grade masks in the office, according to the report.

The temporary policy of weekly testing comes amid outbreaks of highly contagious cases of the Omicron variant in the country, the report adds.

West Bengal BJP writes to state election commission asking for postponement of municipal polls amid rising COVID-19 cases

Considering the rise in COVID-19 cases, the BJP of West Bengal wrote to the State Election Commission (SEC) on Friday asking to postpone the municipal elections for a month.

“We would like to add that since the notification of the said elections on 28th December 2021, according to the Bulletin of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal, daily reported COVID cases increased from 732 to 23,467 on 13 January 2022, “It said.

The BJP said the positivity rate also rose from 2.35% on December 28, 2021 to 32.13% on January 13, 2022 in the state.
