Cougars Seek Love With Their Sons In Ridiculous ‘MILF Manor’

Netflix viewers raised eyebrows last year when the streamer announced Dated and related, a series that sounded semi-incestuous. Siblings, cousins and other related duos entered Love Islandlike villa to find love – they all cuddle around with the other love-hungry bachelors, while their relatives next to them did the same. It was a bit creepy, but altogether tamer than the title suggested.

Dated and related looks like a G-rated Pixar movie compared to MILF mansion, a raunchy romp with that huge relative twist. Getting into the TLC series – yes, this is on TLC, though it feels like it should live alongside HBO Max FBoy Island– we knew we would meet a handful of MILFs looking for love. What we not know is that the dating pool would consist entirely of their sons, who would also like to sleep in the same villa. The hilarity! The awkwardness!

If MILF mansion sounds familiar, you may be thinking MILF Islanda fake competition program developed by NBC in an episode of 30 Rock, in which older women chat with eighth graders on an island. While there are some differences – there are not 20 MILFs, there are eight; there are no eighth graders, but there is a 20-year-old…MILF mansion feels like it was ripped straight off Liz Lemon’s desk. It’s satire put together in a real show.

The show exists purely to inspire “WTF” comments, clickbait headlines about moms groping their sons, and utter outrage. Perhaps TBEN News will run a segment about the so-called “Learning Channel’s” lack of family values — oh wait, it already is — even though Rupert Murdoch has a penchant for women at least 30 years his junior. Any press from TBEN News about this risqué show (in fact, any coverage) is good press. The more people do a double recording when hearing “MILF mansion”, the more people watch at least one YouTube video out of curiosity.

Whether that YouTube video leads to a new fan is the real question. The show itself is lazily produced, with no host or prize set up to guide viewers. The women are looking for love, so are their sons, but what is the end goal? Without any structure, it’s hard to predict what an entire season will be of MILF mansion may go. Although other bizarre reality dating shows like FBoy Island (in which women find love in a sea of fuckboys and nice guys), there are often cash prizes and, in from FBoys case, Nikki Glaser to guide them to the end. Instead of a host, text messages are sent to the mothers and sons, announcing the challenges and any updates. MILF mansion could do with a bit of restructuring to give it some real personality in charge – maybe all the stars have given the city a chance to host.

But the twist still lends itself to a thoroughly entertaining piece of reality television for those who like to cringe, like me! The mothers are crazy to varying degrees, while most of the sons are quite clumsy; together they form complete chaos. In the first challenge, the mothers are blindfolded and must grope all the men to find their own son. Several moms are really up for the challenge, playfully rubbing their fingers over abs they hope aren’t their son’s. In another scene, a son talks about how he wants to massage one of the mothers’ feet, lather them in oil, and then eat them. If you have a premise as naughty as MILF mansion‘s, you can really go wild with the cheesiness.

There is a problem at the core of it MILF mansion that needs to be addressed: the show doesn’t understand what a “MILF” really is. Google the acronym; I don’t have to spell it out for you. But a MILF doesn’t just include women who go after men of a younger age. A MILF is just an attractive woman with kids. Rather, a “cougar” is an older woman who goes after men half her age. A MILF could be pining for a DILF. This show instead assumes that all MILFs are cougars. The MILF mansion contestants try to clear this up in the first episode, arguing that cougars are older than MILFs, but the show ultimately fails to understand the difference between these two types of women.

None of this matters if you just want to watch a crazy show with a crazy premise straight out of a Mad-Lib. MILF mansion doesn’t dwell on the difference between MILFs and cougars, nor does it try to make a huge political point about the double standard at play: that older men can date younger women without comment, but it’s new for an older woman to date a younger man. It’s not as deliciously cheesy as it is FBoy Island or Love is blind, but the premise is overwhelming enough to tune into at least one episode. Once MILF mansion is able to lean into the cheese factor while adding a cheerful host and clear focus we will all thank 30 Rock for accidentally inspiring such a brilliant TV.
