NEW DELHI : Congress chief Rahul Gandhi criticized the Centre’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic on Saturday, comparing the current situation to a failure in the middle of the ocean, with the ship not knowing where to go.

“They (the central government) basically took all of our warning systems off and shut them down and were in the middle of the ocean in the storm and now the ship has no idea where to go,” said Gandhi at the Congressional Working Committee (CWC) meeting that took place earlier today.

“This constant declaration of victory on behalf of the government and also a sense of arrogance on the part of the government that ‘haan theek hai, kar diya’ (yes okay, we did). this government, the manner of their action, which is at the origin of this problem, ”he added.

He suggested that a clear vaccine strategy and income support are needed to contain damage from the virus.

“We need humility, a clear vaccine strategy and income support to contain this virus and the damage it causes.

“The Indian government’s mix of arrogance and repression of the truth is killing thousands of people,” he said in a tweet.

In a video attached to the tweet, he denounced what he called the “constant declaration of victory” and a “sense of arrogance” on the part of the government in claiming “we did it”.

“It is the nature of this government, the manner of its action, which is at the origin of this problem”, he affirmed.

The former congressional leader alleged that the government “has removed all of our warning systems and shut them down.”

India is currently witnessing a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The highest peak in coronavirus cases on record in a single day was reported on Saturday with more than 2.34 lakh new cases and more than 1,300 deaths in the past 24 hours.

The chief congressman also tweeted: “We need humility, a clear vaccine strategy and income support to contain this virus and the damage that comes from it. The mixture of arrogance and repression of the truth of the Indian government is killing thousands of people. ” (ANI)
