CWG 2022: Sakshi Malik Receives Gold Medal in Women’s 62kg Freestyle Category, Her First CWG Medal


Indian wrestler Sakshi Malik took the country’s third medal in wrestling of the day at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham by beating Ana Paula Godinez Gonzalez in the women’s 62kg freestyle final on Friday.

Canadian Gonzalez initially dominated the game by taking a 0-4 lead in the first period. In the second period, Malik made a full comeback to tie the scores 4-4 and won the game through the fall.

The match lasted 3 minutes and 47 seconds. Malik reached the final by winning 10-0 on the basis of technical superiority against Etane Ngolle from Cameroon.

Sakshi Malik defeated Kelsey Barnes of England 10-0 in a fall in the Women’s Freestyle 62 kg quarterfinal to advance to the semifinals.

Previously, Indian star wrestler Bajrang Punia took the gold medal for India after winning the final against Canadian Lachlan Mcneil in men’s 65kg at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Friday.

Punia was extremely dominant in the first period and did not let his opponent score. He finished at the end of the first period with a 4-0 lead over McNeil.

Grappler Anshu Malik also won the silver medal in the Women’s Freestyle 57kg category in the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games after losing to Nigeria’s Odunayo Folasade Adekuoroye at Coventry Arena Wrestling Mat B on Friday.

Malik faced a 3-7 defeat to Nigeria’s Adekuoroye in the gold medal match. Malik took the first medal for India in wrestling of the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games. Wrestler Deepak Punia will compete for gold later tonight against Pakistani Mohammed Imam.
