CWG 2022: Squash player Saurav Ghosal storms to semi-finals, Joshna Chinappa crashes

Indian squash player Saurav Ghosal continued his stellar run at the on-going Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham when he defeated Scottish Greg Lobban in the men’s singles quarterfinals to advance to the final four stages.

Ghosal faced stiff competition from Scottish in the quarter-finals, but won the match 3-1. He won the match 11-5, 8-11, 11-7, 11-3. The Indian started well. He showed great stroke play throughout the first game.

After things even stood at 2-2, Ghosal pushed his dominance to another level and won the match 11-5.

The second game started well in an exciting way but it was Greg who had the upper hand this time. Ghosal tried to get the upper hand over his opponent, but just couldn’t. Ghosal lost the second game 8-11.

Ghosal got off to a good start in the next game, though Lobban kept up with his opponent. Halfway through the game, Ghosal was leading 5-6. The Indian squash player won the match 11-7.

In the fourth game, Ghosal dominated and won 11-3.

Earlier, Indian squash player Joshna Chinappa from the Commonwealth Games Birmingham 2022 crashed after losing to Canada’s Hollie Naughton in the quarter-finals of the women’s singles on Monday.

The Indian lost her game in the quarterfinals against Naughton 3-0. The first game was a hard fought one, but the Canadian was simply the better player. The second game was extremely one-sided and Chinappa lost it by a large margin. The final match involved a tie-breaker and Naughton eventually emerged victorious.

Joshna Chinappa reached the quarter-finals in the women’s singles category after beating New Zealand’s Kaitlyn Watts in her round of 16 match on Sunday.

She won by a margin of 1-3. She won the match within four games 11-8, 9-11, 11-4, 11-6. Watts couldn’t get the best of her opponent despite equalizing in the second game.

Joshana Chinappa will also be featured in the mixed doubles and women’s doubles categories at CWG 2022 starting August 3.

Commonwealth Games 2022 began in Birmingham on July 28 and will last until August 8.
