Dane Cook’s new fiancé was a teenager when they started dating

Dane Cook set the internet on fire for the first time in years on Tuesday — and it’s not his jokes that get people talking.

The 50-year-old comedian announced his engagement to Kelsi Taylor, a 23-year-old aspiring singer and Pilates instructor from Los Angeles, through a coordinated and effusive piece in People magazine.

“I asked my best friend, the woman I shared some of the most beautiful moments of my life with, to marry me so we can start the next chapter of our lives together. I also thought about how absolutely gorgeous she looked,” the strip said.

Taylor added: “The moment he started reaching for his back pocket, my stomach turned. I couldn’t have been more perfect right now. The only thing that went through my mind was, ‘Wait, is this really happening? Is he proposing?’”

A few hours later, he shared on Instagram a video of the July 13 proposal, which took place at his vacation home in York Beach, Maine. The Massachusetts resident says the city has special meaning to him, having spent a lot of time there as a child and even scattered his mother’s ashes in the coastal town at her request.

The clip shows Taylor smiling and holding up her ring for the camera. Drone footage of the picturesque coast and a look back at the couple’s five-year relationship round out the celebratory post. Aside from the size of the rock or how he kept the plans a secret, it’s their 26-year age difference that sparked most of the online chats about the couple.

To be clear, Cook started dating Taylor in 2017 when she was only 18 years old.

The May-December romance, to put it generously, has sparked quite a few conversations about age gaps and “grooming,” that dreaded word co-opted by the right to refer to everything gays do, but that’s still a specific meaning, believe it or not.

“Keep Dane Cook some slack. His only choice was to date someone too young to have heard of him,” said one person. “Chris Delia and Dane Cook walk into a bar and their dates have to wait outside,” joked another, referring to the stand-up comedian and Whitney actor who was dropped from his agents after numerous women accused him of chasing them online when they were underage. Cook was further compared to other adult male celebrities who have dated teens before, including Jerry Seinfeld and Elvis Presley.

In 2018, Cook said he met the singer at a game night at his home. During an Instagram Q&A, he said they were friends for “a while” before they “like fell together” [other] and then upgraded to love,” said Us Weekly.

Not much is known about Taylor. Her Spotify page has only 17 monthly listeners. Her latest single, ‘Fall In Love’ from 2019, has been listened to 1,163 times since Tuesday afternoon. ‘That’s not how you fall in love. But I don’t want to stop, because maybe it’s time for me to drop my guard. I know you’ve tried so hard, but I can’t bear another scar,” she sings over a sumptuous piano arrangement with a delicate yet powerful voice.

Cook has promoted her burgeoning career on Instagram a few times, writing in April 2017: “She’s a talented singer, but more importantly, she’s a genuine person. Check out her music and get to know her. She’s going to go far!”

The strip’s star has dimmed considerably since his heyday in 2007. Things started to take off for Cook at the turn of the century, about a decade after he first started performing in 1990. A once-omnipotent comedian with power to fill arenas across the country, his younger, lopsided crowd (who make up today’s older millennials) eventually outgrew his cartoonish energetic stage persona with few punchlines and high volume. That, coupled with a joke-stealing scandal briefly discussed on Louiehas kept him out of the headlines for most of the past decade.

In an interview with The everyday beast podcast The Last Laugh, Cook attributed this silence to industry typecasting and a sense of personal accomplishment. “I took comedy everywhere I dreamed of. There was no place left where I wanted to bring stand-up comedy,” he said. During a comeback media blitz in 2019, Cook mentioned Taylor twice, both times to noticeably reluctant responses from the studio audience.

“People are like, ‘You rob the crib,’ and I’m like, ‘She hasn’t been in the crib for nine years,'” he said, laughing very little during a 2019 performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

A few months later he appeared on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon where he hammered again at Taylor’s age.

“Where sometimes people get a little fussy with the relationship is that I’m 47, she’s 20,” Cook said to a pair of stunned “oh’s,” who turned into hoarse laughter as everyone realized they were equally uncomfortable with the subject. . “Oh, thank you, that was the best laugh of approval I’ve ever heard,” he added, gesturing to the audience across from him.

At least it doesn’t seem like a happier relationship on social media.

“I spent all day walking downtown, taking pictures in the Fun-O-Rama arcade, and buying a good old york beach sweatshirt. Playing a tourist is so much fun,” Taylor wrote on the day of her engagement, weeks before it was revealed to the world.
