Today September 25 marks the anniversary of the birth of one of the most prominent faces in Indian political history – Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya. The day is celebrated as Antyodaya Diwas every year. He was a great thinker of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and co-founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), which is currently the forerunner of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Born in 1916 near the town of Farah in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, Upadhyaya lost his parents early on and was brought up by his maternal uncle. Her father was an astrologer while her mother was a housewife. Despite a troubled childhood, Upadhyaya was a brilliant student. He even received a gold medal, Rs 250 for books, and a monthly scholarship of Rs 10 from the Maharaja of Sikar.

In 1937, Upadhyaya was first associated with RSS while studying at Sanatan Dharma College. He also attended a 40-day summer vacation RSS camp in Nagpur. Upadhyaya was introduced to RSS by his classmate named Baluji Mahashabde.

He was found dead near Mughalsarai station in Uttar Pradesh on February 11, 1968. According to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), they announced that he had been killed by thieves.

On the occasion of his birthday today, the official social network of the BJP published a note for the leader. The party hailed Upadhyaya as a staunch nationalist, an excellent organizer and a pioneer.

Former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis also offered his “floral tributes to the father of integral humanism” and posted some photos on Twitter.
