DeSantis Boots Woke Up District Attorney Andrew Warren for Breaking State Laws

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has suspended a George Soros-backed prosecutor for failing to enforce state law and will request his resignation.

DeSantis said: Hillsborough County Attorney Andrew Warren – who oversees the Tampa Bay area – will be removed from office immediately.

At a news conference Thursday, DeSantis said Warren had “publicly put himself above the law,” while frustrating local deputies and citizens with a soft-on-crime approach.

DeSantis said Warren had ordered his office to let serious violations slip and he swore not to enforce current or future laws regarding abortion or gender reassignment surgery on minors.

The governor on Thursday tore lenient prosecutors across the country, saying cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles have deteriorated as a result.

“We will not allow the pathogen that has been in the country to ignore the law, we will not allow it to gain a foothold here in the state of Florida,” he said. “We’re going to make sure our laws are enforced and no prosecutor puts themselves above the law.”

Susan Lopez will now act as the new prosecutor of the 13th Judicial Circuit, DeSantis said.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister praised DeSantis’ action Thursday, claiming his deputies and residents were tired of Warren’s soft-spoken approach.

For example, Chronister said Warren’s office refused to file a case against an alleged mobster who shot a victim and then shot at a house from which he fled.

That residence, Chronister said, was filled with women and children.

One of the residents, he said, now lives in a motel because she lives in fear of returning to the house with the shooter still on the street.

The woman feels “like her status as a victim doesn’t matter and the prosecutor just doesn’t care,” Chronister said.

He noted that Warren’s office said they would not press charges because the statements would be too weighty.

Chronister said Warren is acting as a “supreme authority” by “reducing charges, dropping cases and single-handedly determining what crimes are legal or illegal in our county.”

DeSantis argued that failure to comply with laws disproportionately harms poorer communities.

He quoted the recall voice of former San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin to make his point

“The places that voted to keep him were affluent communities that are not the victims of the policy,” he said. “The places that voted to recall him were the working-class communities because they bear the burden of ignorance and refusal to enforce the law.”

Warren, a Democrat, was elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2020.
