Museum closed, fitness centers closed, the marinade has been closed for a long time. And from Monday, stores for non-essentials will also close in all cantons. There are exceptions for hardware stores, hardware stores and florists.
This leads to the remarkable constellation that ski lifts and toboggan runs are among the few leisure activities still open. Federal Councilor Alain Berset confirmed that ski areas can remain open. He said at the press conference:
With or without skis and snowboards. In recent days, the mountains have become magnets for the lowlands. They shy away from corona blues or just high fog. Social networks are full of messages from the snow.
For example, the Bernese FDP national adviser Christian Wasserfallen. He shared a photo of a snowy forest edge:
And a few days ago her party colleague Christa Markwalder shared a selfie from the Heinzenberg GR ski lift with the message: “Skiing with a protection concept – it works!”
After all, Basel Green National Councilor Maya Graf has climbed a hill in Sissach:
Zurich government adviser Jacquelin Fehr was also drawn to the snow. She shared on Twitter from Sihlsee in Canton Schwyz:
When the weather was fine on the blanket of fog, the post buses were full. A spokesperson for PostBus says:
However, PostBus also informs that they generally carry fewer people than in other winters. On lines with a high proportion of tourists, demand in recent weeks (holidays and weekends) is significantly lower than in the previous year. Postbus operations managers assume they had 30 to 40 percent fewer passengers.
Much more is permitted in Switzerland than in Germany or Austria
It is not a given that you are allowed to go to the mountains and ski at all. A look at the rules of neighboring Germany shows this. There is an exit restriction in the Land of Baden-Württemberg. Staying away from home is generally only allowed “for good cause”. Outdoor exercise or sport is only permitted between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. in the evening. In addition, you can only travel with a person who does not belong to the same household.
Enjoying the sunset with several friends is not an option. Hotels are also not allowed to accommodate tourists.
The implementation of a ban on travel longer than 15 kilometers with a high number of infections (200 per 100,000 people in one week) is still under discussion. This is not yet valid in Baden-Württemberg. The incidence at 7 days is 138.
For comparison: Switzerland recorded 262 infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 7 days. Freedom of movement is not restricted and meetings with a total of five people are always possible.
Ski lifts operate in Austria – but with restrictions
In Austria there is an exit restriction which applies throughout the day. There is an exception for walks and sports. Although indoor sports facilities are closed, trails and ice rinks remain open. Cable cars also run. FFP2 masks must be worn (from 14 years old). Gondolas and chairs that can be covered can only be half full.
In Switzerland, gondolas are two-thirds full. However, this rule is only binding for cable cars that are not part of the public transport network.
