It’s time to go back to hell. It’s been a long, long time since Diablo 2, but for many, it’s still the show’s lofty watermark, infused with spooky Gothic visuals that complement the traditional click and kill isometric action that has put people on a treadmill of loot for decades. This weekend is the technical alpha for Diablo 2: resurrected, and the fans are snoring.
The technical alpha is this weekend, and many players seem to have already received invites: Paul Tassi from TBEN with his impressions tomorrow. But if you’re still interested, it can’t hurt to register on the Blizzard website, where you’ll need a Battle.net account to express your interest. But note that this is neither a beta nor even an open alpha: only what appears to be a relatively small number of players are invited, and Blizzard is clear that the game is most definitely in a state. early, and that things are bound to be wrong.
According to Blizzard, the alpha will feature Amazon, the Barbarian, and the Witch, which players can use to slice up Acts 1 and 2, which is actually a pretty big part of the game. Act 2 still has it. been my favorite at the time, so I can’t wait to see how it goes.
Some are understandably wary of attempting to resurrect a beloved Blizzard game, given the disaster that has been Warcraft 3: Reforged. But everything we’ve seen so far has been very positive, and the developers have described being as true to the original version of the game as possible, even standard modern conveniences such as waypoints have been retained, as they have changed the way the game felt. What we’re talking about here is a remaster, not a remake, with the original game completely intact. Even the improved visuals are much more in line with the overall style of the game, which can be a hard line to follow when talking about improving pixelated graphics which lack a lot of the detail we expect from modern games.
So we’ll see how it goes, but I’m excited about this one. Check back soon for impressions.
