A Dillard’s employee has been fired after allegedly throwing the N-word at a black father, who then graciously explained to the employee — in a video that later went viral — why the slur stings.

“My 10-year-old son heard you call me ‘a damn n—–’,” one man is heard to say in the video posted to Instagram. “I want you to know that this is unacceptable.”

Instagram user Aisha uploaded the video Monday with the caption: “DILLARDS TRY TO REMOVE THIS VIDEO.”

The social media user went on to explain that she pulled out her camera when a Dillard employee in Dallas, Texas, called her cousin, who was shopping with his son, a racist remark after asking where the changing rooms were.

“Unfortunately, a 10-year-old man was exposed to how cruel this world can be to him BECAUSE OF THE COLOR OF HIS SKIN,” says Aisha, “but his father showed him the right way to handle the situation, graciously.”

In the video, a bald white man in a buttoned-up shirt and glasses leans over a counter of Lacoste items while listening to a black man.

“It is unacceptable. You should not do that. You’re too old,” the Black man says calmly.

“I carry myself with honor. I would never despise any person by calling them out of their name,” he continues. “You don’t know the impact of what you’ve done to my son. But maybe you didn’t know.”

The Dillard’s employee then tried to defend himself, suggesting that he did not know the son was with his father.

“It doesn’t matter,” the father continues, with his family standing behind him. “You shouldn’t be talking like that – period.”

“I know,” the employee responds.

“So if you know that, Why are you doing that, dude?” asks the father.

The employee keeps trying to explain his behavior, then says he hurt his leg and tells the father that he worked in the store for over 20 years.

“You don’t know what straw can break the camel’s back,” replies the father.

“I know,” the employee says.

“But you didn’t respect me…and my family,” the father says, pointing to his child. “But I would never do that to your family or even to you. …I would never treat anyone that way. But I want you to get to know man to man, that shit ain’t cool. … Treat people with respect, and morals, and values.”

Before the father leaves, he explains to the employee, whom he called “Homer”, that he would have a conversation with his son about how Homer has no “respect for [his] kind, or any human being.”

“This is not a black and white issue; this is an idiotic issue,” says the father.

The father runs away after telling the employee that he has warned his supervisor.

The internet praised the father for his direct, heartfelt approach to racism.

“I LOVE THE WAY HE MADE IT!!” an Instagram user commented below the video.

“That’s how you deal with hate. With compassion and honesty,” a Twitter user wrote. “He showed that he was the better man through his actions. Important tip for you, my brother. Black white red brown we all humans.”

“@Dillards is giving this man $10 million for having to train your employees and for emotional distress,” a Twitter user said Friday morning.

While social media users cheer the dad on, they weren’t so nice to the employee or Dillard’s in general.

“Homer is a coward. Homer says racist things in front of children but recoils when grown man politely confronts him,” a social media user tweeted. “Homer has to retire. Homer has to think about his life. Don’t be Homer!”

“Remember, Dillards hires employees who call people racist comments in their stores,” noted one Instagram user under a post from Dillard wearing an “exclusive” outfit.

On a Facebook post promoting new handbags, a user questioned whether the man identified as Homer could keep his job.

“The allegations against our former employee were immediately investigated, found to violate our standards and his employment with Dillard’s was terminated immediately,” the company said.

But some people still urged the department store to officially apologize to the family as well.

According to the company’s LinkedIn page, Dillard’s is one of the largest fashion retailers in the US, with nearly 300 stores in operation. The chain’s headquarters are located in Arkansas.

Dillard’s did not immediately respond to The Daily Beast’s multiple requests for comment.
