Director of Texas School where gunshot was recovered

UVALDE, Texas (TBEN) — The principal of the Texas school that witnessed the deadliest classroom shooting in a decade was reinstated Thursday, three days after she was suspended with pay after criticism of security from a legislative committee.

Mandy Gutierrez, who was suspended Monday by officials from the Uvalde School District as principal of Robb Elementary School, was reinstated on Thursday in a short letter from Superintendent Hal Harrell.

The recovery came after Gutierrez, in a letter to committee members, disputed key findings that a “culture of complacency” had developed at the school that allowed a gunman to enter the school and kill 19 children and two teachers. She also said the lock on the door of the fourth-grade classroom where the shooting took place on May 24 worked when a security guard checked it the night before.

Harrell suspended Gutierrez Monday pending a performance review related to school security. However, in his letter dated Thursday, Harrell said she would be allowed to return to work immediately “and will continue to serve the district in an administrative capacity.”
