Dominic Thiem recovered after wasting four match points in a dramatic second set tie-break to beat Novak Djokovic in the last four in the ATP final on Saturday. The US Open champion won 7-5, 6-7 (10/12), 7-6 (7/5) and will face Rafael Nadal or Daniil Medvedev in Sunday’s elite eight-a-side final . The world’s four best players have all reached the semi-finals for the first time at London’s O2 Arena, which hosts the season-ending event for the 12th and final year.
Thiem forced the only break to take a tight 7-5 first set, but neither player was able to make the breakthrough in the second set, which ended in a tie-break.
Thiem collected four match points, but an agonizingly watched them all slip away as 17-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic equalized.
It was a similar story in the third set, with both rock-solid players serving and the game ended in a decisive tie-break.
The Serbian world number one took a 4-0 lead and looked certain to win, but Thiem came back strong, taking six points in a row to earn two more match points.
He couldn’t capitalize on the first of these but won the second to win the match.
