DU PG Admission through CUET from 2023-24, what about merit based entry now?

The Academic Council of Delhi University (DU) on Tuesday approved the proposal to hold postgraduate admission through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) from the next academic cycle. The existing postgraduate (PG) entrance test will not take place in the upcoming session.

A ten-member committee formed to propose a strategy for PG withdrawals from 2023-24 proposed the change in pattern, according to the PTI news agency.

Under the existing system, 50% of the admission is made directly for students who have completed their undergraduate degree from the university based on their merits in their qualifying examinations, while the remaining 50% of the seats are occupied based on the rank of candidates in the DU postgraduate entrance exam.

“The AC has approved to recommend PG admissions through CUET, with half seats remaining on merit for students at DU,” a council member told PTI.

The committee had suggested that the PG admission will be conducted through a single-window mechanism, where NTA will conduct CUET from the 2023-24 academic session for all categories.

It further said that a separate merit list will be prepared for the candidates clearing the CUET-PG and those belonging to the other categories who appeared earlier in the postgraduate entrance test.

In preparing the merit list, priority will be given to the category of candidates that used to appear in the DU admission test, it added.

“During the preparation of the merit list, the priority is defined as follows: The former category of candidates who used to seek admission through the Postgraduate Admission Test will comprise the first 50 percent of the seats and include the candidates who qualify for this Common University Admission Test depending on his/her eligibility to appear in the test under this category,” the committee recommended.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) also introduced the CUET for postgraduate degrees earlier this year.

A total of 66 universities, including central, state and private universities, had opted for the CUET PG exam for admission. Delhi University was one of the universities that opted out of this admission test and admission to the PG courses will continue as per the existing processes.
