Dubai: An eco-friendly Dubai-based date factory aims to send healthy date products to more countries in South America, Southeast Asia and Israel.

The Al Barakah Dates factory announced on Thursday the expansion of its Dubai Industrial City plant to become the world’s largest privately-owned date factory, which exports date products to 79 countries. It announced plans to not only expand its solar-powered facility, but also to expand the export of date products and ingredients to promote healthy eating.

100,000 tonnes of dates

Speaking to Gulf News, Yousuf Saleem, managing director of Al Barakah Dates, said their expansion “will double the size of its existing facility to be able to process more than 100,000 tonnes of date products per year, nearly the half of the UAE’s entire national crop.

The new plant, which is slated for completion in early 2022, will become the largest processor of date ingredients in the world, with its plant covering a total area of ​​600,000 square feet, including 420,000 square feet of space dedicated to processing and processing. cold storage.

Saleem added that the facility will be equipped with more than 6,500 solar panels to offset 3,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.

Alternative to sugar

Saleem noted, “(Our) expansion comes as date production increases year on year, driven by demand for healthier sugar alternatives and fueled by modern technologies that have helped products compete as as healthy, vegan alternatives to sugar and other fructose products. . “

“This expansion will allow us to further expand our line of organic and conventional date products to meet the growing needs of health-conscious consumers around the world. Today we have taken the traditional date and made it into various ingredients that serve as direct substitutes for sugar. These include pastes, syrups and date sugars, ”he added.
