EFL Cup: Tuchel assesses Saul Niguez performance as Chelsea beat Southampton

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has commented on Saul Niguez’s performance in Chelsea’s EFL Cup round of 16 victory over Southampton on Tuesday night.

Tuchel said he was satisfied with Niguez’s performance for Chelsea against Southampton, adding that the midfielder had taken a “giant leap”.

The 26-year-old struggled to make an impact after arriving on loan from Atletico Madrid during the summer transfer window.

Chelsea beat Southampton 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Kai Havertz and Che Adams scored their teams’ goals in regular time.

Recall that Niguez has only played once in the Premier League for Chelsea so far this season and was eliminated at half-time after a dismal first game against Aston Villa a few weeks ago.

“It was a good game, it was a big step in the right direction for him,” Tuchel told Chelsea TV after the game.

“I’m glad. Maybe we thought he [Saul] would grapple with the intensity and thought about [substituting him after] 70 minutes, 75 [minutes], but he was getting better and better, had chances and shots.

“We thought we had to keep it [on the pitch] and give him the minutes. It was a good step for him.
