Another billion aid package in Italy

The government in Rome decides on further aid measures for the citizens. However, the new billion-euro package should not increase the deficit further.

The Italian government is providing billions more to help families and businesses because of the sharp rise in energy and consumer prices. The Council of Ministers decided on a package of 17 billion euros on Thursday, as Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced. Because of the consequences of the Ukraine war, Rome had previously helped the citizens in 2022 with more than 35 billion euros.

The new measures will continue to depress petrol and diesel prices at the pump. In addition, low-income families continue to receive support in paying the extremely high electricity and gas bills. The tax breaks for companies, for example, will also be extended. Seniors will also get an increase in their pensions earlier than planned. Draghi spoke of an “extraordinary amount” of aid. (dpa)
