England will start their delayed Euro 2021 campaign with a 2018 World Cup semi-final rematch against Croatia at Wembley. Gareth Southgate’s men lost this game heartbreakingly with Mario Mandzukic scoring in extra time, despite a 1-0 lead in England.
This is not the first time that Croatia has been a painful thorn on England’s side. Croatia prevented England from qualifying for Euro 2008, after a disastrous campaign under Steve McClaren resulted in a 3-2 defeat.
Since that fateful summer night in Russia three years ago, the two countries have met twice in the UEFA Nations League, again in 2018. They drew 0-0 in Rijeka before England scored a semblance of revenge with a 2-1 win at Wembley. Jesse Lingard and Harry Kane both scored in the final 15 minutes to pull off the comeback.
It is hoped that there will be fans present at Wembley, as the FA Cup test events will determine the feasibility of hosting fans at this summer’s tournament. Boris Johnson has suggested he would like to see Wembley at full capacity for the July 11 final.
