Luke Shaw (Manchester United)
Selection number: 3
Last left-back after injury to Ben Chilwell and James Justin on the eve of the squad’s announcement. Shaw has pushed his way back into the Manchester United squad after finally facing competition from Tyrell Malacia. He has to keep fit and show the form of the European Championship, which has since been seen in glimpses.
say anyway: Move forward like you did during the Euro 2020 final.
Don’t mention: Jose Mourinho, who seemed to speak out about Shaw whenever he got the chance.
John Stones (Manchester City)
Selection number: 5
Another one who has been out of the squad for the past four years and back. He didn’t play for England in 2020 and his place at Manchester City looked questionable, but he stayed to fight for his place and got regular games and his England spot back. Southgate is confident in his style, even if it is criticized for leaving the team open to his mistakes.
say anyway: You are the closest England has to Franz Beckenbauer.
Don’t mention: Injuries, which were a problem and caused him to be sidelined after the last international break.
Kieran Trippier (Newcastle United)
Selection number: 12
Will provide cover at left back, just like in the European Championship. Moved to Newcastle and his form has been outstanding, providing leadership as well as quality on the ball and solidity. Didn’t play in the last international break, but is in Southgate’s plans. Has made the most assists of any player in the Premier League this season.
say anyway: Put yourself on set pieces.
Do not mention: Bet. He was suspended from the European Championship for telling a friend to ‘take over’ his move to Atletico Madrid.
Kyle Walker (Manchester City)
Selection number: 2
Has recovered from groin surgery to hopefully compete in the tournament even if he misses the start. Such an important part of Southgate’s system, playing as a right center back in a three-man defence, with the pace to get himself out of trouble. His inclusion hints at how much Southgate regards him.
say anyway: Your ability to recover is amazing.
Don’t mention: Trying to get rid of an injury. He tried to carry on when the problem arose and ended up with surgery.
Ben White (Arsenal)
Selection number: 21
It was against Switzerland earlier this year when he was called up as a last-minute replacement for John Stones, before being moved to right-back in the second half. Southgate had a new option at fullback and White’s versatility has put him on a plane to Qatar, as well as an excellent season at the top of the Premier League.
say anyway: His name. It’s Benjamin on his birth certificate and he prefers it.
Do not mention: Other football matches. He wasn’t a big fan growing up and doesn’t watch many games to this day.
