ESIC extends deadline until June 30 next year for workers to qualify for unemployment benefit

The Public Employees’ Insurance Company (ESIC) has extended the one-year deadline to June 30, 2021 for workers to receive unemployment benefits. Atal Bimit Vyakti Kalyna Yojna was launched in June 2018 for two years as a pilot.

Under this scheme, unemployment benefits are paid to workers covered by the ESI scheme. The benefit under the plan can now be used until June 30, 2021.

In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, the company has decided to increase the unemployment relief rate under the scheme to 50% of the average daily wage compared to the previous rate of 25% and to relax the criteria for ‘eligibility. It is also launching an awareness program to help workers in distress.

The relief becomes due 30 days from the date of unemployment and the claim can be made directly to the designated branch of the company by the worker. It was 90 days earlier. The improved benefit and relaxed conditions are applicable during the period from March 24 to December 31, 2020.

Repair requests can be made online at the company’s website with the submission of the physical claim with an affidavit, a photocopy of the Aadhaar card and bank details at the designated ESIC branch by mail or by no one.

The insured person must have been in insurable employment for a minimum period of two years before unemployment and have contributed at least 78 days during the contribution period immediately preceding unemployment and at least 78 days during one of the three other contribution periods out of two. years before unemployment.
