Eskom has announced the load shedding schedule for the coming week, starting with Phase 3 on Monday morning and descending to Phase 2 by Friday.
“Sufficient progress has been made in restoring emergency generation reserves and dam levels at pump storage systems are expected to be fully replenished by tomorrow
morning,” it said.
Overnight, a generating unit at the Arnot and Majuba power plants returned to service. Eleven generation units are expected to return to service in the next 24 hours, bringing the
capacity limitations. This includes about 1,300 MW of capacity from the Hydro de Cahorra Bassa in Mozambique, Eskom said.
However, a generation unit at the Tutuka Power Station and at Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme was taken offline overnight for emergency repairs, so phase 4 load shedding will continue until 5am Monday.
The schedule is as follows:
- Phase 4 load shedding will remain in effect until 5 a.m. Monday.
- State 3 load shedding takes place on Tuesdays from 5 a.m. to 5 a.m.
- Phase 2 load shedding will be implemented on Tuesday from 5 a.m. and will remain in effect until midnight Friday.
Eskom will hold a media briefing Monday to update the public on the state of the power system. Any further significant changes will be communicated immediately. Eskom urges all South Africans to conserve electricity.
The group recently released its load shedding outlook for the rest of the year, noting that it needs to keep unplanned outages below 13,000 MW to minimize ongoing power outages.
In a more heavily loaded scenario, if the outage remains above 14,500 MW, phase 2 load shedding will be frequent in the near future. If the utility cannot keep the outage below 16,000 MW, load shedding in higher phases will become the standard.
