Ethnic studies promote anti-Semitism and bigotry in US schools

Parents are understandably concerned about the divisive curricula now being taught in American schools. Ideas such as critical race theory and extreme gender ideology often replace the subjects traditionally taught in core classes such as science and social studies.

Students no longer learn the importance of our nation’s history. They teach a distorted worldview that divides us into the oppressors and the oppressed.

This dangerous ideology has only become more prominent with the introduction of ethnic studies into our national schools, with a new California law soon mandating courses on the subject.

While ethnic studies may sound benign, it is just CRT under another name, targeting a once unimaginable bigotry: anti-Semitism.

The Liberated Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum Consortium Explicit states on its website that “Critical Race Theory is one of many theoretical lenses used in ethnic studies.” LESMC has a history of urging schools to adopt anti-Israel and anti-Jewish classes and advocacy with its program.

The consultancy formerly promoted a “toolkit” titled “Preparing to Teach Palestine” explaining that teachers “might want to put gentrification and forced relocations at the center of their classes.” This would be part of an effort to educate students about the “impact of continued colonial control over water resources on the US-Mexico border and in Gaza.”

The full “toolkit” explains that “teaching the truth about US history is an act of liberation” and that “teaching the truth about Palestine is also an act of liberation”.

LESMC appears to have a significant impact on a large school district with over 600,000 students. Parents defend education reported that Guadalupe Carrasco Cardona filed for LESMC in February 2021 “to become a 501c(3) corporation with the State of California”.

Her profile on the website of the consultancy lists her as “lead” of the organization and explains that she is a member of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Ethnic Studies Curriculum Committee. Hair LinkedIn profile shows that she is still “teacher of theater and journalism” at the Edward R. Roybal Learning Center in the district.

In August 2020, the LAUSD passed a solution require high school students to take at least one ethnic studies course to graduate. The aim of the neighborhood course is to: to learn students on so-called forms of oppression, including ‘capitalism’ and ‘cisheteropatriarchy’. Anti-Semitism soon followed.

In September 2021, PDE reported those classroom decorations at Alexander Hamilton High School included a Palestinian flag and a sign that read, “Make Israel Palestine Again.” PDE later reported that another board in the classroom urged students to honor “Palestinian mothers with children in Israeli prisons.”

This is not just a problem on the west coast. While LESMC is a major contributor to the spread of anti-Semitic disinformation in California, more organizations and individuals are spreading this evil ideology to students in schools across the country.

Passaic County Education Associations in New Jersey sent an email to teachers who earlier this year promoted a “summer series” by the Democratic Socialists of America BDS and Palestine Solidarity Working Group. The purpose of this series was to “equip” teachers with the knowledge and practices needed to bring the truth about Palestine into our classrooms.

One session of this series was designed to teach educators about “heroic resistance to Zionism.”

In another incident that occurred in May 2021, a school administrator in Fairfax County, Virginia, said, stated: that it “hurts my heart to celebrate as Israel kills Palestinians and desecrates the Holy Land.” She added that “apartheid and colonization were wrong yesterday and will be today, here and there.”

In the meantime, The Wall Street Journal recently reported that fourth-grade students across the country had “the worst drop in math and reading scores in decades” since the pandemic hit the US. This included “the largest drop in reading scores since 1990 and the first statistically significant drop in math scores” since 1973.

While our nation’s students struggle more than they have in decades, our schools choose to spend precious class time — and taxpayer money — on ethnic studies courses that deliver no benefit and, on the contrary, foster bigotry.

Students no longer learn the importance of our nation’s history or even the most basic life skills that will help them succeed in their careers. The focus of our schools is misleading and our education system must change course before more irreparable harm is done to the youth of our country.
