Fire at SpaceX launch site burns 68 acres in protected sanctuary, killing wildlife

A fire, sparked by a SpaceX test at a launch site in South Texas, destroyed 68 acres of forest in a protected reserve last Thursday (Sept. 8), wildlife experts say.

Crews at the Starbase in Boca Chica were conducting a static test of the prototype Raptor spacecraft when burning debris set fire to nearby grass, local news reported.

Fire crews rushed to the site and performed controlled burns in an effort to prevent the flames from reaching the buildings on Starbase, but the fire quickly spread to adjacent areas.
