After announcing his intention to run for Lord Mayor in July, Basil was accused of conflict of interest claims over fears he could use his media platform to promote his campaign.

The TV host denied the claims, telling Weekend Australian on Sunday that he planned to ‘play by the rules’.

“It would be an unfair advantage if I continuously used it as a platform for my election, but that’s not what I’m going to do,” he said.

Basil denied the claims, saying: `` Since everyone has the right to continue working in the professions they choose if they run for office, I think as long as I play honestly and play by the rules, and the rules we set, so in my mind it's alright

Speaking of his commitment to the city, Basil told Perth Now: ‘I live in the city, I work in the city and I walk the city every day and like all Western Australians I expect to make our capital safer, cleaner and cheaper. , more accessible, more dynamic and more user-friendly. ”
