Cricket West Indies has long struggled with financial instability. Their cricket was hampered by it and it has led to numerous quarrels between the players and the West Indian cricket board.
Over time, things have gotten a little better, but Cricket in the Caribbean is suffering at its base as the West Indies are far from achieving optimal financial stability.
Former West Indian bowler Winston Benjamin has contacted well-known cricket figures in India in an effort to help the matter. Benjamin does not need financial donations; he is happy to receive something as simple as cricket bats or other equipment that he can help hand out to aspiring players in the area.
Winston Benjamin thanked Mohammad Azharuddin for his help
“We used to have a tournament in Sharjah, where it used to be a benefit game for players from different countries. I don’t want benefits. All I want is someone to say ‘here’s some gear’ – 10-15 bats, that’s good enough for me. I don’t want $20,000. I just want some gear so I can give it back to the youngsters. That’s all I ask” Benjamin said in a video shared by veteran sports journalist Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel.
Benjamin only expects the highest minimum as the IPL generously supports a large number of cricketers worldwide.
He also asked Sachin Tendulkar for some help and also thanked Mohammed Azharuddin, “Mr Tendulkar, if you are in a position, could you help me? Give me something.
“I want to thank my good friend Mohammad Azharuddin. He sent me some equipment. Congratulations! And thank you very much for that help. Stay in contact. Anyone who wants to contribute, feel free.”
Benjamin, who represented the West Indies in 85 ODIs and 21 Test matches between 1986 and 1995, took 161 wickets.
