California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill Friday to borrow $1.4 billion to preserve the state’s last nuclear power plant, despite objections from environmentalists.

The Diablo Canyon nuclear plant in San Luis Obispo has been the subject of controversial protests by environmentalists, but the California energy crisis has forced Newsom to postpone plans to close the plant.

“Climate change is causing unprecedented stress on CA’s energy system and I appreciate the legislature’s action to preserve energy reliability while the state accelerates the transition to clean energy,” said New arrival on Friday.

The bill allocates money to keep the plant running at least until 2030. It was originally slated to close in 2025 as part of the state’s green energy initiatives.

On Monday, Democrat-controlled California legislation voted overwhelmingly in a bipartisan vote to pass the bill. California will ban the sale of new gas-powered vehicles in the state by 2035, prompting many to mock the rule after officials announced the possibility of causing blackouts as a result of a heat wave in the state.

The Diablo Canyon plant produced about 5% of the state’s electricity in 2021.

Some environmentalists have come to support nuclear power after years of conservatives pointing out the obvious hypocrisy of pushing for green power while falsely denouncing nuclear power.

Others, such as the group Friends of the Earth, find Newsom’s view “incredibly reckless” as an earthquake fault was discovered near the factory about three years after construction began.

Newsom is considered by some to be a potential competitor to President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination for the 2024 presidential election. The Democrat showed his interest in national politics when he focused on Republican policies being implemented in Florida.
