Hayward already had an interest in moving to Charlotte. He signed an offer sheet with the Hornets in the 2014 offseason, but Utah tied and returned to Jazz.
Marc Stein of the New York Times reported on Friday evening that Indiana remained “Hayward’s favorite destination.” This would have forced the Pacers and Celtics to agree to a signing and trading deal.
Hayward was a free agent after giving up his final year with the Celtics, dropping a salary of $ 34 million for the 2020-2021 season.
