Guinea-Bissau National Assembly: The military has repeatedly interfered with civilian leaders since the institution of multi-party elections in 1994

Restrictions on the media and freedom of association have eased somewhat, although police continued to disrupt some demonstrations, says US NGO Freedom House.

It says that journalists are regularly harassed and intimidated, including being pressured by political figures and government officials regarding their reporting.

Reporters Without Borders says journalists self-censor when they report on government failings, organized crime and the influence of the military.

Private radio stations operate alongside the state broadcaster. A government-owned newspaper publishes alongside non-state titles.

In December 2021, there were 900,000 internet users, 44% of the population (Internetworldstats.com). Facebook is the most widely used social media platform.
