Hasan Ali should have rested much sooner: Mohammad Hafeez on Pakistan whiteball squad’s exclusion of Pacer

The men’s rosters for the Asia Cup and the Dutch tour were unveiled earlier this week by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), with a few notable absentees. Veteran player Shoaib Malik was eliminated from the T20I team for the Asian Cup, and bowler Hasan Ali was also dropped after a spate of underperformance.

Pakistan’s out-of-form fast bowler Hasan was replaced in the teams by uncapped white-ball pacer Naseem Shah.

Mohammad Hafeez, a former cricketer for Pakistan, has now elaborated extensively on Hasan’s exclusion from the team.

Hasan Ali is a fighter: Mohammad Hafeez

The bowler needed a break after numerous appearances for Pakistan, stressed Hafeez, who shared a locker room with Hasan when he was playing. He also stated that the choice to rest the bowler should have been made by Pakistan much earlier.

“Hasan is a great cricketer. I know him from his early years, he is a fighter. At certain stages in your career, when you’re not going through good form, you get mentally tired, even though you want to perform. I think the management was unfair to him in that he was played in games where he could have rested.” Hafeez told Dawn.

“The selection committee and team management decided to play him in every game and mentally he was not ready for that pressure. He didn’t get the gap he wanted. I think he was played unnecessarily. So it was a mistake by management and even to a certain extent from Hasan. Because when you’re young, you don’t understand how important the mental aspect of the game is,” he added.
