The Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced on Wednesday 14 September 2022 the 15-man squad for the upcoming 2022 ICC T20 World Cup, which was devoid of T20 legend Andre Russell. The tournament will be played in Australia from October 16 in seven cities in the country.

Nicholas Pooran will lead the two-time T20 World Champion in an ICC event for the first time, while Rovman Powell is his deputy.

There is no place in the roster for all-rounder Andre Russell, who last played for the West Indies at last year’s T20 World Cup, which was held in the UAE. However, Evin Lewis, who also played for the Men in Maroon in that tournament, has been recalled after being absent for nearly a full year due to fitness issues.

Fabien Allen, who has taken a break from cricket for family reasons, has not been taken into account, and leg spinner Hayden Walsh Jr was also not selected for the squad. Instead of Walsh, the CWI selectors chose Yannic Cariah, who made his West Indian debut during last month’s ODI series against New Zealand.

Another uncapped player picked is the left-arm all-rounder, Raymon Reifer.

West Indies face Scotland in their qualifying round opener

Unfortunately, the West Indian team did not qualify directly for the main draw and must first play the qualifying round to reach the super 12s stage of the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup.

They face Scotland in the first of three Group B matches, played at the Bellerive Oval, in Hobart, Tasmania. And then they will face Zimbabwe on October 19th and then Ireland on October 21st, with the top two teams from Group B joining the Super 12s along with the top two teams from Group A featuring Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates. Emirates, the Netherlands and Namibia.

“We have selected a mix of youth and experience to represent the West Indies. During the selection process, we were aware of the ongoing CPL and looked at the players who played very well. I said at the beginning of my tenure that I would be interested in giving players the opportunity and I think I’ve been consistent about that. I believe it is a very good team that we have selected, and it is a team that will compete as we have to qualify from round 1 to the Super12s.” said Desmond Haynes, CWI chief selector.

Before the 2022 T20 World Cup kicks off, the West Indies will face Australia in a two-match T20I bilateral series to be played October 5 in Gold Coast and October 7 in Brisbane.
