The Men in Blue began their penultimate leg of their dress rehearsals for the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup on Tuesday. Rohit Sharma and Co take on Aaron Finch-led Australia in the three-game T20I series opener in Mohali’s Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium.

Skipper Rohit Sharma revealed, however, that India will have to go without pacer Jasprit Bumrah and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant for the opening match. Following India’s tactical changes for the 1st T20I, legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar admitted India will miss the services of both players.

It is a priority that Jasprit Bumrah is fit for the T20 World Cup, says Sunil Gavaskar

Gavaskar told star sport after Australia won the toss and chose to field, “Well, I think these six games out there — they’ll try to understand why they’re sticking together as a team and of course Bumrah’s absence will be big.”

“But I think it’s important for India to have a fully fit Bumrah for the World Cup, that’s the big picture. We always try to look at the bigger picture, and the bigger picture is the World Cup. So I think it’s very important to keep him fit.” he added.

Sunil Gavaskar is optimistic that Rishabh Pant will appear later in the series

Echoing his thoughts on Rishabh Pant’s omission, Sunil Gavaskar claimed the star wicketkeeper will get a chance in the remainder of the series. Gavaskar believed Indian think tank will provide equal opportunities for Pant and Dinesh Karthik to showcase their batting exploits in the T20I series against Australia and South Africa ahead of the T20 World Cup.

“As for Pant, he gets to play the remaining five games. My feeling is – probably try to split it between both wicket-keepers and give themselves a chance to show what they can do with the bat as finishers too. Let’s not do too much saying about the fact that Pant wasn’t picked in the team, I think they’re trying, as I said before, to get their core team together (for the World Cup) and that’s why they chose this team.” Gavaskar added.
