IND vs NZ: “I want Sanju Samson to have every chance” – Ravichandran Ashwin

Veteran India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recently spoke of star wicket-keeper batsman Sanju Samson not getting a consistent run of chances in the Indian team, saying the 28-year-old “will clearly become popular” if he doesn’t play part of the XI.

Samson was not part of India’s 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad, despite consistent performances with the bat. In the recently concluded three match T20I series against New Zealand, he was not given a chance to play and many fans and pundits expressed disappointment at his non-selection in the XI.

Ashwin went on to talk about how Hardik Pandya handled the subject of Samson’s non-selection very well. In particular, when the press asked Pandya about Samson’s non-selection, he replied:

He knows it’s not personal. It has to do with the situation. I am a people person. So if anyone needs me, I’ll be there for them. Everyone knows that if they feel something my door is always open to come and have a chat with me because I understand how they feel.”

Ashwin said Hardik Pandya was responding to a question about Thala MS Dhoni style Samson.

“He (Samson) is a very exciting player to watch, but as we went with a different combination, we couldn’t play against him from now on,” said Hardik Pandya. The press even asked him why he didn’t play Sanju Samson. Hardik Pandya replied in Thala Dhoni style. He said my room door will always be open, any player can come and have a conversation with me.

“It was very good to see him speak so clearly l. I don’t even know if he meant to say that in Thala Dhoni style because we all know that Hardik is super close to Thala Dhoni. And he had said earlier that he learned a lot from Thala Dhoni. He handled a tricky question that is always trending on social media quite nicely. So kudos to Hardik,” said Ashwin.
