IND vs NZ: Mohammed Siraj Named as New No. 1 ODI Bowler in ICC Rankings; Goes past Trent Boult

New Zealand’s Trent Boult lost his top spot in the MRF Tires ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings for bowlers to India’s Mohammed Siraj, capping off an outstanding calendar year.

It’s an impressive climb for Siraj, who only joined the Indian ODI team in February last year after a three-year absence that saw him not participate in a 50-over international match.

Since then, Siraj has played in 20 matches and taken 37 wickets, making him one of India’s most reliable fast bowlers. As a result, the 28-year-old underdog began collecting awards.

After being selected for the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year on Tuesday, Siraj had even more reason to rejoice on Wednesday as he surpassed Boult and Australian sailor Josh Hazlewood to take over as the top ranked ODI for the first time bowler.

Siraj’s performance in the ODI series at home earlier this month against Sri Lanka and New Zealand showed just how much the right arm has progressed in recent years alongside his dominant form over the past 12 months.

Midway through last year, Indian bowling coach Paras Mhambrey encouraged Siraj to improve some parts of his game. Judging by recent performances, the extra effort put into the brisk fast has paid off.

Siraj led the team in wickets taken during the three match series against Sri Lanka with nine, and he followed it up with a four wicket haul in the first match of the just concluded series against New Zealand.

With just two rating points separating him from Hazlewood at the top of the table, Siraj rises to number one among ODI bowlers with 729 rating points.

After New Zealand’s series defeat, Indian captain Rohit Sharma was questioned about the young Lent and he was all praise for Siraj.

“He has done very well, he understands what the team expects of him.” Rohit said.

“To come and get the new ball, swing the ball, get early wickets. He also has so much skill in the middle overs. The more he plays, the better he gets.”

Following the conclusion of India’s home series against the Kiwis, fellow Indian pacer Mohammed Shami moves up 11 places to 32nd overall on the new list of ODI bowlers.
