Team India captain Rohit Sharma and his deputy KL Rahul reached a milestone during Sunday’s game against Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
After being asked to bat first by the Pakistani skipper Babar AzamRohit along with his partner Rahul brought India to a heady start in the power playovers.
Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul create record in T20Is
Rohit took on Pakistani youths Naseem Shah and Mohammad Hasnain in the first overs. The Hitman hit three fours and two sixes in his 16-ball 28 to set up a fast score of 54 runs in five overs.
Rahul, whose attack speed had been questioned during the previous appearance against Hong Kong, held Naseem Shah for a six over cover and later hit another in line of sight area.
The Indian skipper took off having mistimed a lengthy episode for Haris Rauf before Khushdil Shah made a remarkable catch and avoided a collision with teammate Fakhar Zaman.
Rahul soon joined his opening partner in the dugout just after the power play as he charged against Shadab Khan.
Rahul has joined Rohit as the new opening pair in T20Is at the expense of Shikhar Dhawan. The duo has gone from strength to strength to pull off some awesome attacks and loot the opposition camp with a flurry of boundaries.
The pair made their 14th 50-plus run in T20 Internationals, with Ireland’s Paul Stirling and Kevin O’Brien’s leapfrogging 13 in the list.
With O’Brien announcing his retirement from international cricket last month, the Indian pair may face no competition from their Irish counterparts in this record.
Pakistan defeated India by five wickets
Kohli scored big for India in the first innings when his 44-ball 60 pushed them to 181/7, albeit 20 runs short of the projected score.
Pakistan rode in the crucial grandstand between Mohammad Rizwan (71) and Mohammad Nawaz (42). The duo added 73 runs in 39 balls to keep Pakistan in the hunt. The latter made a big difference and delivered best in the pinch-hitter role. Asif Ali and Khushdil Shah played key cameos at the end to push their side through in the first match of the Super 4 stage.
India will face Sri Lanka at the same venue next Tuesday (September 6) while Pakistan will face Afghanistan on Wednesday (September 7).
