Indian National Cricket Team Legendary Batter Sunil Gavaskar expressed surprise at India’s decision to drop veteran wicketkeeper batsman Dinesh Karthik from the playing XI in the 2022 Asia Cup Super 4 high-voltage encounter against Babar Azam’s Pakistan.

Dinesh Karthik was surprisingly dropped from Team India’s playing XI for the clash against Pakistan on Sunday, September 4 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

The 37-year-old was preferred to Rishabh Pant in the group match against Pakistan, where he had the chance to play just one ball.

The decision to drop Karthik would have been made due to the absence of a lefthanded batter in the playing XI. Notably, star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who batted at number 4 for India in the group match against Pakistan, was banned from the tournament due to a knee injury. Deepak Hooda had replaced Jadeja in the XI of play and there was only one spot left on the team, which was taken by wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant.

Meanwhile, battle legend Gavaskar said it was hard to understand India’s decision to drop Karthik.

“Also dropping Dinesh Karthik, that was hard to understand. Here you have already identified him as a finisher and in this big game you don’t have him on your team. So that was a bit of a surprise,” Gavaskar told India Today after India’s 5-wicket loss to Pakistan.

Speaking further about Kohli, Gavaskar said the modern-day batter hit Pakistan brilliantly and said the 33-year-old was mediocre most of the shots he played.

“We definitely have, he was mid-range from the first ball he came across. There were some great shots, the pull shot was the best of them all and even the flick for six to get to his fifty, there were some excellent shots. Most importantly, he kept all shots centered except for one from the leg spinner, otherwise everything was off center of the bat.”

“That gives the batter confidence. It’s not about how many runs you score, but how you hit, he hit really well in this match against Pakistan. That bodes very well for India in the upcoming matches, Gavaskar added.

Former Indian National Cricket Team skipper Kohli, who has regained his mojo after a lengthy meager patch, is currently the top finisher in the 2022 Asia Cup with 154 runs under his belt averaging 77 and a strike rate of 126.22 .
