Former India National Cricket Team all-rounder Irfan Pathan has named Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan as his openers for the upcoming three-match ODI series against the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team.
India recently defeated Sri Lanka 2-1 in the three match T20I series and now the teams are ready to lock horns in a three match ODI series. The 50-over assignments will be played on January 10, 12 and 15 in Guwahati, Kolkata and Trivandrum respectively.

Speaking on the Star Sports show ‘Follow the Blues’, Pathan said India should have at least three openers in the squad with Rohit and Kishan being the first choice pair while Shubman Gill serves as backup.
“I really think you should keep at least three openers in place right now, and for me Rohit and Ishan come first and then of course Shubman Gill,” Pathan said during a speech on the Star Sports show “Follow the Blues’.

“Shubman Gill is definitely a class act, the two T20 games didn’t go well, but he’s got the ability and he’s put in a good performance in a day of cricket. So it’s important to have him at number three, but I’ll start with Rohit and Ishan Kishan because Ishan Kishan has been playing good cricket lately and scoring a lot of points,” said Pathan.
37-year-old left-handed lead-off batsman Shikhar Dhawan was dropped from the ODI squad for the series against Sri Lanka following his run of poor performances, which opened the door for Kishan and Gill.
Coming back from injury is never easy – Irfan Pathan
Rohit Sharma returns to competitive cricket in ODIs in Sri Lanka after missing action due to a finger injury suffered during the three match ODI series against Bangladesh.
Pathan, meanwhile, feels that coming back from injury is never an easy task for the players, but he was confident that Rohit will overcome any challenge in his path.
“Coming back from injury is never easy and the biggest challenge would be for Rohit Sharma to get back into shape. What matters to a leader. Look, Rohit Sharma has played tremendously well as a white ball cricketer for India over the years and he needs to continue this form and make his legacy even better. Fitness will be a challenge along with his return to form, but I am confident that he will be able to fully overcome these challenges,” said Pathan.
