Former Indian player Parthiv Patel said the changes India made to their batting order in the first T20I are intended to accommodate Virat Kohli in the lineup going forward.
Suryakumar Yadav, in a very surprising move, was seen opening the at bat along with skipper Rohit Sharma in the first T20I against the West Indies at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad. Rishabh Pant, who opened with Rohit at England’s T20Is, was deployed to hit at number 4 and Shreyas Iyer at number 3. Ravindra Jadeja came for Dinesh Karthik store at No.6.
Karthik has continued his brilliant streak since returning to the national team, going unbeaten on 41 from 19 balls, including four boundary posts and two sixes, hitting at 215.79. India scored 190/6 in the opening innings thanks to fifty from the skipper and a late cameo from the experienced keeper.
India wants to fit Virat Kohli in the XI: Parthiv Patel
Parthiv said the changes are being made to secure the place of former Indian skipper Kohli in the T20I side. Kohli has opted out of the T20I series against the West Indies and is currently on hiatus.
“Whatever changes we see happening because India wants Virat Kohli to fit in the XI,” Parthiv told Cricbuzz.
“I would have liked Virat Kohli to have played the one day series. It is an easier option to get back into shape. There are 50 overs and a lot of time, where you can get your 70-80 runs like Shikhar Dhawan or Shubman Gill did , with a run-a-ball,” he added.
We may see Suryakumar Yadav opening in the whole series: Parthiv Patel
Parthiv was counting on India to open in the remaining four games in this series with Suryakumar Yadav.
“Rohit Sharma said in the pre-match conference, ‘we know there are gaps to fill, and that’s why we’re going to try different things’. They did that with Rishabh Pant, which gave him a full series in England. Now we can see Suryakumar opening throughout the series. Maybe we’ll see Ravindra Jadeja bowling in the power play, just to see what he can produce,” said Parthiv.
India limited West Indies to 122 for 8 at the end of the game to win by 68 runs. Both teams move to St Kitts to play the second T20I game at Warner Park on August 1.
