Hailing US Vice President Kamala Harris’ shattering rise to her country’s top political office, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Harris “a source of inspiration to so many around the world”, before a bilateral Indo-American at the White House on Thursday. Find below the full transcript of Prime Minister Modi’s words before the meeting:
“Excellency, first of all, I would like to express my gratitude for the warm welcome you have extended to me and to my delegation.
Your Excellency, a few months ago we had the opportunity to speak to each other on the phone. We had an in-depth discussion at that time. And the way you spoke to me so warmly and so naturally, I will always remember. Thank you so much.
It was, Excellency, if you remember, a very difficult time. India faced the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, a very difficult time for us. But then – like a family, the sense of kinship and so warmly you extended a helping hand, the words you chose when you spoke to me – I will always remember it, and I want to thank you. from the bottom of my heart’s heart.
As a true friend, Excellency, you had given a message of cooperation and very full of sensitivity. And immediately after that, we found out that the US government, the US private sector, and the Indian community have all come together to help India.
Excellency, President Biden and yourself, you have taken over the leadership of the United States in a very difficult atmosphere and times, but in a very short period of time you have had many accomplishments under your belt, be it Covid, climate, or the Quad. On all these issues, the United States has taken very important initiatives.
Your Excellency, among the largest and oldest democracy, between India and the United States, we are indeed natural partners. We have similar values, similar geopolitical interests and, also, our coordination and cooperation are constantly increasing.
To strengthen supply chains, Excellence, and with regard to new and emerging technologies, and space, these are areas of particular interest to you. These are areas that also interest me and a particular priority. And these – and these are areas where our cooperation is very important.
Your Excellency, between India and the United States, we have very dynamic and solid interpersonal relations. You know that too well. Over 4 million people of Indian origin, the Indian community is a bridge between our two countries, a bridge of friendship. And their contribution to the economies and societies of our two countries is indeed very commendable.
Your Excellency, your election as Vice President of the United States was itself such an important and historic event. You are the inspiration for so many people around the world.
I have every confidence that under President Biden and your leadership, our bilateral relations will reach new heights.
Excellency, continuing your – this journey of victory, the Indians would also want you to continue this in India, and therefore they are waiting to welcome you. And therefore, I specially extend an invitation to you to visit India.
